explaining what we do

What is that we human beings ultimately depend on? We depend on our words. We are suspended in language. Our task is to communicate experience and ideas to others.--Niels Bohr

How do we explain what we do to others outside our field. I enjoyed watching a video of Alan Alda (of ex-MASH fame) talking about how we can communicate our science effectively in presentations. He highlighted the idea that we need to have a real conversation with our audience not just lecture them. In a conversation, we really think about what is happening inside the other person's head rather than merely offloading everything that is happening in our head. How do we improve our story-telling skills? How do we learn to listen to others more effectively? .....Work in progress.
