How do we explain what we do to others outside our field. I enjoyed watching a video of Alan Alda (of ex-MASH fame) talking about how we can communicate our science effectively in presentations. He highlighted the idea that we need to have a real conversation with our audience not just lecture them. In a conversation, we really think about what is happening inside the other person's head rather than merely offloading everything that is happening in our head. How do we improve our story-telling skills? How do we learn to listen to others more effectively? .....Work in progress.
